Precision concrete masonry units are the most widely utilized type of concrete block. Precision blocks have square edges and smooth texture that are most commonly associated with concrete block. When specifying concrete masonry units, the dimensions are indicated in the following manner: width x height x length. Dimensions of precision masonry units are usually expressed in terms of their nominal size, which is 3/8 of an inch greater than their actual size. This 3/8 of an inch difference accommodates the standard 3/8 inch mortar joint that is utilized with precision units. For example, a unit with the nominal dimensions of 8″ x 8″ x 16″ would have actual dimensions of 7 5/8″ x 7 5/8″ x 15 5/8″.
