Feeding Recommendations for Milk Replacer fed to herd replacement calves (2 levels)

Feed colostrum milk (102 degrees F) for the first three days. Calves should receive at least 2 quarts f colostrum as soon as possible after birth and another 2 quarts 6 hours later. Thereafter, feed 2 quarts of colostrum in 12 hour intervals.

Standard Feeding Directions:

Feed Indicated Amounts Twice Daily:

Age of calf 4-7 days old:  6 ounces of  Calf Milk Replacer   ... makes 1.5 quarts of of Milk Replacer Solution (including added warm water)

Age of calf 2-6 weeks old:  8 ounces of  Calf Milk Replacer   ... makes 2 quarts of of Milk Replacer Solution (includine added warm water)

* 2 quarts of milk replacer solutiion is 8 ounces milk of replacer powder mixed with 1.8 quarts of warm water

Calves that weigh less than 70 lbs.  feed about 1/3 less milk replacer and water.

Recommended Feeding Directions:

For increased rate of gain and during cold weather conditions, use the following feeding schedule.

1 week old calf feed 8 ounces of milk replacer = 2 quarts of milk replacer solution, feed 2 times per day

2 week old calf feed 10 ounces of milk replacer = 2.5 quarts of milk replacer solution, feed 2 times per day

3-6 week old calf feed 12 ounces of milk replacer = 3 quarts of milk replacer solution, feed 2 times per day

7-8 week old calf feed 12 ounces of milk replacer = 3 quarts of milk replacer solution, feed 1 times per day

HOW TO MIX

For best mixing results start by adding half of the total amount of water needed.  ALWAYS USE WARM WATER of 120-140 DEGREES F.

Add the milk replacer powder and mix well with warm water into a uniform solution.  Add additional cooler water to equal the total amount and final drinking temperature of 102-105 degrees.

To mix large batches, 50 pounds of milk replacer powder should be added to 44 gallons of water. This will make approximately 50 gallons of milk solution.

IMPORTANT

Calves should be offered fresh water on a daily basis. Small amounts of a fresh and balanced calf starter feed should be available at one week of age.  Calves can be weaned at 6 weeks of age, provided they are in good strong physical condition and eating a minimum of 1.5 - 2 lbs of a high quality Calf Starter Feed.  It is recommended that calves on a beef program, in which high gains are important, be kept on milk 2 weeks longer.

Milk Replacer feeding levels are a guide only. The feeder determines the actual amount fed, depending on calf size and condition.

Get baby calves off to a great start, FRESH water should be available at all times, 

replace water in the pen daily with FRESH water for drinking free choice.
